The Players: David McCue, guitar, lead vocals; Matt Johnson, electric guitar, lead vocals; L’Angelo D’Silva, bass, backup vocals; John Wilkinson, drums, percussion.

Material: With a sound that is heavy on vocal harmonies and has just enough classic rock energy to keep you interested, Blatant Feel can easily be compared to Crosby, Stills & Nash, as well as the Allman Brothers. This group’s music covers so many styles and influences, it’s like a Who’s Who of rock’s greatest, including Carlos Santana, Paul Simon and Stephen Stills, to name a few. Blatant Feel’s music, while enjoyable on its own, is also political with lyrical passages that reference political leaders and the after-effects of 9/11.

Musicianship: Taking turns at shining and harmonizing, each guitarist in this group stands on his own without overpowering the others. McCue and Johnson are impressive at handling their axes, and D’Silva’s bass provides the heartbeat underlying each song. Johnson in particular chimes in with Santana-like skill.

Performance: Blatant Feel was obviously at ease and comfortable onstage. Knowing that music was the key, the group put together a tight set with each song leading right into the next without the need for wasted conversation. None of the musicians were afraid to sail off into a jam. There was an underlying South African rhythm, much like on Paul Simon’s Graceland. Blatant Feel was a hit and the audience showed its appreciation loudly.

Summary: Blatant Feel is a “feel good” band, returning us to a time when music could be enjoyed for the simple reason that it moves us. Perhaps we need to return to those times again and, if so, this band could very well help lead us there.
